8 New Leadership Cities Selected

Washington, D.C. (March 3, 2015) – Today, STAR Communities announced that 8 new cities have been invited to participate in the Spring 2015 Leadership STAR Community Program. With extensive support from STAR Communities staff, the leadership communities will work through the STAR Community Rating System together with the goal of becoming certified by this time next year.

The Spring 2015 Leadership STAR Communities include: Abington Township, PA; Boise, ID; Cambridge, MA; Columbus, OH; Henderson, NV; Iowa City, IA; San Antonio, TX; and Steamboat Springs, CO.  Together, they represent just fewer than 3 million residents.

Sixty-six local governments have participated in the Leadership STAR Community program over the past two years. Participating communities report that the program helped them gain a deep understanding of their community’s strengths and needs and has provided a springboard for civic engagement, cross-agency coordination, integrated budgeting and performance management, partnerships with philanthropy, and economic development.

“Again, our Leadership Program has succeeded in attracting a diverse and committed group of local government leaders to formally pursue a STAR Community Rating,” reported Hilari Varnadore, STAR Communities executive director. “STAR’s comprehensive approach to economic, social and environmental sustainability has proved to be an inclusive and transformative way for cities and counties to measure performance and make improvements to their communities.”

Once certified, communities will receive national recognition for their efforts and be well positioned to address issues that pose local challenges to sustainability.
