Privacy Policy

Thank you for visiting the STAR Communities web site (“STAR Communities Site” or “Site”), owned and operated by STAR Communities (“STAR Communities” or “we”). STAR Communities respects your privacy and provides this policy (“Privacy Policy”) to explain what information STAR Communities may collect about you, how STAR Communities and other companies may use it, and which technology may be used to collect your information.

When you use the STAR Communities Site, we collect information about you to provide and enhance our products and services and improve or increase your use and enjoyment of the STAR Communities Site. Information about you may also be shared with other companies. This may enhance your use or enjoyment of our products or services.

We may change this Privacy Policy at any time by posting a revised Privacy Policy on the STAR Communities Site, and the changes will be effective upon posting. If we change this Privacy Policy, we will post the date of the last revision at the bottom of this Policy and will notify You of the changes via email. Please check back from time to time to review the current version. Continued use of the STAR Communities Site will confirm your consent to this Privacy Policy.

Our Privacy Policy is part of our Terms of Use. If you do not agree to the terms of our Terms of Use, including this Privacy Policy, you may not use the STAR Communities Site.

INFORMATION WE COLLECT

A. INFORMATION YOU CHOOSE TO PROVIDE:

You may also choose to voluntarily provide information to us about yourself and your preferences. A user account is required to access and participate in some portions of the STAR Communities Site. By creating a STAR Communities online user account, you provide us with certain information in order to, among other things, receive email notifications from STAR Communities, download and access resources provided by STAR Communities, use the STAR Communities Reporting Tool, and access the STAR Communities Technical Guide. This information may include your name, email address, title, company name, address, phone number(s), credit card information (including billing address), and demographic information (age, gender, etc.). You may also choose to post content (such as data, comments, videos, audio, text, or photographs) that may be shared with others through the STAR Communities Site.

You may choose not to provide us with any personally identifiable information, such as by not registering for a user account on our STAR Communities Site. However, if you choose not to provide certain information, you will be unable to take part in some of the services we offer and will be unable to access some of our products and tools, including but not limited to posting content, downloading the Technical Guide and other resources, and inputting information into the Reporting Tool.

B. INFORMATION COLLECTED AUTOMATICALLY:

When you visit or use the STAR Communities Site, we may automatically collect and store information about your computer or mobile device and your activities so that we can enhance our services and your experience. We may use web technologies such as cookies and pixel tags to collect information about your visit to our STAR Communities Site. The information we collect may include, but is not limited to: the version of our Application/Site used; the type of your computer or mobile device (for example PC/iPhone/Andriod/iPad); products and/or tools downloaded; internal web pages visited; IP address; browser information; clicks made; and general geographic location. This sort of information is generally considered non-personal information. We may combine information about your use with information about others’ use to generate aggregated non-personal information about visitors as a group.

Cookies: When you visit our STAR Communities Site, we may place “cookies” on your computer to recognize you. We do this to store your preferences, collect statistical data and track your use of our STAR Communities Site.

“Cookies” are small pieces of information that are stored by a user’s internet browser on a user’s computer’s hard drive. Cookies are widely used, and most web browsers are configured initially to accept cookies automatically. If you prefer not to accept cookies, you may adjust and configure your browser settings accordingly. However, if you turn off cookies, or refuse to accept a request to place a cookie, some features and services on our Site may not function properly.

Web Beacons: When you visit the STAR Communities Site, we may also collect aggregated site-visitation statistical information through clear GIF technology, which is also known as a “web beacon”. Such aggregated statistical information is non-personal information. This Site employs web beacons to speed your navigation of the Site, recognize each user and his or her access privileges, and track a user’s site usage. Web beacons are small bits of code embedded in web pages or emails that assist in delivering cookies and help the Company determine whether a web page on this Site has been viewed and, if so, how many times. For example, any electronic image on this Site, such as an ad banner, can function as a web beacon. Although you cannot decline to receive web beacons when visiting a web page, you can choose not to receive web beacons by email if you disable HTML images or refuse HTML email messages.

Log Files: The Site server automatically recognizes the Internet URL from which you access this Site. STAR Communities may also log your Internet protocol (“IP”) address for system administration and troubleshooting purposes. (An IP address indicates the location of your computer on the Internet.) STAR Communities does not link an IP address to any personally identifiable information.

Mobile Device IDs: If you’re using our mobile Site or other software applications (“Applications”), we may use mobile device IDs (the unique identifier assigned to a device by the manufacturer), instead of cookies, to recognize you. We may do this to store your preferences and track your use of the Applications. Unlike cookies, device IDs cannot be deleted. Ad companies may use device IDs to track your use of the Applications, track the number of ads displayed, measure ad performance and display ads that are more relevant to you. Analytics companies may use device IDs to track information about usage of the Applications.

D. HOW WE USE YOUR INFORMATION

We use your information to provide and improve our services and our products, to diagnose and fix problems, and to better understand our users so that we may provide you with a more effective user experience, customize services for you (such as by remembering your preferences), process and complete your transactions, make special offers, and provide you with notifications regarding our tools, products and services. We may use your email address to allow you to log in to your account, send you notifications regarding your account or your use of the STAR Communities Site, and send you confirmations (of your upload of data, orders, etc.). We may also use your email address to respond to your customer service inquiries. Your credit card information is used only for providing you the products and services you requested, such as the purchase of the Technical Guide or other resources through the STAR Communities Site and is not stored on STARcommunities.org. We may also share your information with other companies for various reasons. What information we make available to other companies depends on the nature of our relationships with them. Where feasible, we require these other companies to keep our user information confidential.

We protect our user information as an asset of our business. If STAR Communities or substantially all of its assets were acquired, or in the unlikely event that STAR Communities goes out of business or enters bankruptcy, user information would be one of the assets that may be transferred or acquired by a third party. You acknowledge that such transfers may occur, and that any acquirer of STAR Communities may continue to use your personally identifying and non-personally identifying information as set forth in this Privacy Policy. Otherwise, STAR Communities will not rent or sell potentially personally identifying or personally identifying information to anyone without your express consent.

Our Service Providers: We may share all of the types of information we collect with our vendors who assist us in providing services to you. In addition, in connection with any purchase of our products or services, we may share information we collect from or about you with payment processors (such as authorize.net or credit card companies), credit bureaus, and similar organizations as permitted by law.

AUTHORIZE.NET SERVICES: To process your credit card payments, we use the services of authorize.net. You are therefore subject to the authorize.net Terms, which can be found here: http://www.authorize.net/company/terms/. The information collected by authorize.net is subject to the authorize.net Privacy Notice, located at http://www.authorize.net/company/privacy/. By using the STAR Communities Site, you are also accepting the practices described in the authorize.net Privacy Notice as well as the authorize.net Terms, which may be amended from time to time. Your credit card information is not stored on STARcommunities.org, and card information is only stored as necessary to process transactions with authorize.net. STAR Communities has no ability to control or retrieve payment details once such details are sent to authorize.net. STAR Communities does, however, keep a transaction identification in its control in order to complete the order and allow for STAR Communities to void and/or refund payments when necessary.

Analytics: We may collect or allow analytics companies to use tracking technologies to collect information about our users’ computers or mobile devices and their online activities. This data helps us understand how our STAR Communities Site is being used and how we may improve your experience.

Aggregated Information: We may publicly disclose aggregated information about our users, such as the total number of our users and their demographics. We may also publicly disclose aggregated data inputted into the Reporting Tool.

Legal Matters: We may use or disclose user information in response to a legal request, such as a subpoena, court order, or government demand; to comply with the law; to investigate or report illegal activity; to protect the legal rights of STAR Communities, our third party partners, our STAR Communities Site or STAR Communities Site users; or to enforce our rights or defend claims. We may also transfer your information to another company in connection with a corporate restructuring, such as a sale or merger.

E. UPDATING, CORRECTING, OR DELETING INFORMATION

We believe that you should have the ability to access and edit the Personally Identifiable Information you provide us. You may change any of your Personally Identifiable Information or opt out of any specific service by sending us an email at info@starcommunities.org. Please indicate your name and email address, and what information you would like to update, correct, or delete when you contact us.

We encourage you to promptly update your Personally Identifiable Information if it changes. You may ask to have the information on your account deleted or removed; however, because we keep track of past transactions, you cannot delete information associated with past transactions of our STAR Communities services. In addition, it may be impossible for us to completely delete all of your information because we may periodically backup information.

WHILE STAR COMMUNITIES HAS TAKEN COMMERCIALLY REASONABLE PRECAUTION TO SAFEGUARD YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION, STAR COMMUNITIES CANNOT GUARANTEE COMPLETE SECURITY BECAUSE COMPLETE SECURITY DOES NOT PRESENTLY EXIST ON THE INTERNET.
