STAR Communities’ mission is to help cities and counties to set a clear path for sustainability with helpful tools that measure and track progress towards meaningful results that save money and improve communities. To aid communities in this path, we offer a variety of services and technical assistance options.
Trainings & Webinars
STAR Communities regularly holds in-person trainings and webinars on the STAR framework, community case studies, and current topics in sustainability to support communities in our network and partners. Upcoming trainings and webinars can be found on our events page, and past programs can be found on our webinars page. We love to partner on webinars with other organizations that support local governments and are available to speak at conferences and other events. Please contact Aaron Lande for more information.
Technical Support for Certification
Communities typically take one of two paths to achieve certification: they either take a DIY approach and work at their own pace, or they reach out to STAR for customized technical assistance and training. Either way, as part of the Full Access package, communities are entitled to an Intro to STAR webinar and one hour of STAR technical assistance a month. When you are ready to start gathering data, your STAR coordinator will set up an Intro to STAR Certification online training and follow up monthly check-in calls to help you to stay on track and achieve certification in a timely fashion.
If you would prefer extra training and support, STAR offers periodic online courses on the certification process and special in-person programs, such as the Leadership Program, which brings together a cohort of communities as they pursue certification over the course of the year. If you’d like STAR staff to come to your community to kick off the certification program, you may consider the QuickSTARt program, which includes an upfront, multi-day workshop in the community to build buy-in and support for sustainability efforts, clarify and resolve numerous technical and data issues, and provide a clear pathway to achieving STAR certification. Please reach out to Lacey Shaver to ask about upcoming training programs and opportunities.
STAR certification is a huge accomplishment, but it’s only the beginning of a community’s STAR journey. The next step is to use your certification results to catalyze local action and transform your community. To help communities to move into implementation, STAR offers a variety of post-certification services for certified communities, including PR and communications support, custom reporting, and in-community sustainability workshops.
Gaps analysis and strategic action planning workshops are a popular next step after a community achieves certification. STAR can put together a customized facilitated workshop to bring government staff and community partners together to analyze your certification results and prioritize next steps. We have a range of presentations and hands-on exercises that can be tailored to meet the needs of groups of varying sizes. STAR staff can develop the meeting design, materials, and provide facilitation for an in-person workshop. Contact Lacey Shaver for more information.
